Foundations of Health Science
This is a one-credit course that introduces students to a wide range of health careers. Integrated academics combined with health care knowledge and skills provide the framework for a strong health care delivery system in the twenty-first century. This course is the prerequisite for all the health science courses. It is recommended for students who want to prepare for further study in an array of health-related fields at the postsecondary level. Fee required. This class satisfies the graduation requirement for Health.
(Grades 10-12)

Sports Medicine Intermediate
(Sports Medicine I)
Sports Medicine Intermediate is a one credit course that teaches fundamental skills to include therapeutic exercise regimens within the field of sports medicine. Students will explore the study of sports medicine and the relationship to risk management and injury prevention. Students will demonstrate an understanding of anatomy and physiology, with emphasis on the musculoskeletal system. The importance of health promotion, wellness, injury and disease prevention will be emphasized. Students will examine sports medicine facilities, policies, procedures, and protocols utilized in patient care. Career and technical student organizations are integral, co-curricular components of each career and technical education course. These organizations serve as a means to enhance classroom instruction while helping students develop leadership abilities, expand workplace-readiness skills, and broaden opportunities for personal and professional growth. Students will have the opportunity to receive an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.

Sports Medicine Advanced / Health Science Clinical Internship
(Sports Medicine II)
Sports Medicine Advanced is a one-credit course with strong emphasis on musculoskeletal injuries as well as the psychological and sociological responses to injuries and illness. Students will demonstrate critical thinking skills, patient care skills related to prevention, rehabilitation, and management, and communicate appropriate outcomes through oral and written communication. Course content will include an understanding of basic pathophysiology, kinesiology, and principles of treatment. An analysis of a variety of health situations involved in the sports medicine pathway will be conducted through project-based learning, laboratory, simulation, and clinical experiences. Students will also complete an internship in a health-care facility.
Health Science Internship is a one-credit course. It is a structured component of the Career and Technical Education Health Science curriculum that provides an unpaid supervised experience in an approved healthcare setting. The major purpose of an internship is to provide students with professional experience outside of the classroom that is consistent with their career goals. It provides the unique opportunity to integrate and apply learned coursework content/theory in a supervised experience. It should also enhance their academic and professional development through additional training opportunities. Students will have the opportunity to receive BLS CPR and AED Instructor Certification and OSHA 10 Safety Healthcare Certification. This class will receive half Honors credit due to travel time.
Prerequisite: Sports Medicine Intermediate and Application Approved.
Sports Medicine Advanced is an honors course taught 1st semester blocked for 1st and 2nd periods. Health Science Clinical Internship is an honors course taught 2nd semester blocked for 1st and 2nd period.

Therapeutic Services
This course is designed to inform students of the rapid changes in business and industry through a rigorous array of coursework and work-based experiences that prepare the students for advanced learning and a wide range of health career opportunities. Students are introduced to careers in therapeutic services including, but not limited to, nursing, medicine, physical therapist, surgical technologist, respiratory therapist, emergency medical technician, and others.

Patient Care /
Health Science Clinical Internship
Patient Care is designed to provide students with the opportunity to become effective, efficient, and multi-skilled health care providers. The course will aim to provide a working knowledge of advanced patient care skills, vital signs, 12-lead EKGs, oxygen therapy, basic phlebotomy via simulation, and specimen collection and processing. This course will include study skills and practice tests leading to NHA’s Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT) certification that can be taken upon the completion of the course. This class will receive Honors credit.
